Fire & Rescue

The Housenumbers Project

How visible is your home? Can an emergency responder find you?  LICA & the LI Fire & Rescue have teamed up to make sure all of Long Island’s 419 homes have reflective housenumber signs. Please join your island neighbors by placing a sign in your yard and on your house. It could save your life.

Graphic titled “Get Your House Sign!” explaining a community initiative to install reflective house number signs across Long Island to help emergency responders quickly locate homes. The text describes the project’s purpose, funding, manufacturing, and volunteer-led distribution and installation process. Property owners are encouraged to install the new signs even if they already have house numbers. The notice states that 419 signs will be installed by the end of the summer and emphasizes that the signs could save lives. Contact information is provided for Don Wright (207-272-2284) and Jim Schine (267-912-1947) for questions or to receive a sign.

Flyer titled “TOLI House Number Signs” explaining a Long Island community initiative led by LICA to provide standardized reflective house number signs that help Long Island Fire & Rescue locate homes during emergencies. The flyer emphasizes that visibility is critical and states that properly displayed house numbers improve emergency response.

A large section titled “Best Practices for Mounting Your Sign at Your Property” provides installation guidance, including:

  • Signs measure 7 by 10 inches and are reflective white with black lettering.
  • Signs may be mounted on a house, an existing post or tree, or a new post near the road.
  • Install signs high enough to remain visible above snow and easily seen from the street.
  • Stainless steel screws and nails are provided, with recommendations for installation.

Additional guidance explains where to place signs depending on whether a home is visible from the road, set back from the road, or has multiple driveways. The flyer notes that local ordinance requires homes to display address numbers.

The bottom of the flyer lists committee members available for assistance and includes an illustration of a sample reflective house number sign displaying “43 Island Ave.”
