Extreme Heat Watch in effect for
Wednesday-Friday, July 1-3
National Weather Service issued a warning on June 30, 2026, for hazardous heat expected Wednesday through Friday, with the worst conditions on Thursday. The advisory states that heat index values of 105–110°F are likely, overnight temperatures in the 70s will increase heat stress, and multiple rounds of showers and strong-to- severe thunderstorms are possible each afternoon and evening through Friday. Hazards include an increased risk of heat-related illness, damaging winds, and possible power outages. Two color-coded maps of Maine and New Hampshire show forecast maximum heat index values, with many inland areas expected to experience apparent temperatures between 105°F and 114°F.

Long Island Emergency Shelter
The town’s emergency shelter is located in the basement of the Long Island Learning Center, at the corner of Fern and Gorham avenues. It is handicapped accessible, featuring an outside ramp and an inside elevator. The facility has a generator, bedding and a Wellness Center with an exam room and a telehealth room, medical appliances such as crutches and walkers, and two handicapped accessible bathrooms. The building also houses the Long Island Community Library, the Dodwell Art Gallery, the Long Island School, and the Multi-Purpose Room which has a small kitchen.
