WELLNESS SOUP LUNCH SCHEDULE SET
The Wellness Council has set up the Soup Lunch dates for Fall 2024-Winter/Spring 2025 on the town web site’s Community Calendar. They are Mondays: Oct. 21, Nov. 18, Dec. 9, Jan. 10 & 31, Feb. 10, March 10 & 31, & April 14. We hope this will help others planning events. Wellness Christmas Auction begins Nov. 28

The Wellness Council will host its 5th annual on-line Wellness Christmas Auction starting at 5pm, Thursday, Nov. 28, Thanksgiving Day, until 5pm, Friday, December 6. Donations from Long Islanders near and far are encouraged and appreciated.

Donations to the auction can be big or small, and often make great Christmas presents. Last year, several islanders donated a week at their cottage, a popular item because island rentals are so hard to find. Home-made items such as knitted mittens and nautically themed items also attracted competitive bidding, as did baked goods and fresh or smoked seafood. Themed baskets were popular because they make great gifts. Sports equipment in excellent condition, jewelry, and gift certificates to local businesses were also big sellers.

We received 64 donations in the 2023 auction that raised $15,000 to support our programs. We use the funds to host soup lunches; a biweekly nurse visit; flu and covid vaccine clinics; deliver food; provide home care; sponsor a gut health series; improve beach access; give out Valentine’s Day bags; offer private, individual assistance to residents in need; and provide free loans of medical equipment such as walkers and wheelchairs, among other programs and services.

Some islanders have already pledged donations for this year’s auction, but we need many more to continue our Wellness programming. Some of the promised donations are: a box of 12 gourmet bonbons; a hand-made Long Island beach glass pendant; a dessert a month; a hard-copy set of all seven Harry Potter books, one of which is signed by author JK Rowling; an original framed watercolor by the late Anne Kilham; a gift certificate for haddock; and one for a seafood chowder base. Several of these items attracted serious bidding in the 2023 auction.

Bidding takes place on a secure web site and bidders must set up accounts to participate. Registration is quick and easy. If you have already participated in a Wellness auction, you may use the same account. We will provide registration information before the auction begins.
