We had a good turnout today for everyone to check out the new gym and become members (you just need to come to an introduction and sign a liability waiver to join!). Next opportunity is Thursday from 12:30-2:30. The Peloton bikes and treadmill will be set up and ready to go on Thursday. Everything else is ready now!

Update! Monday March 4th will now be 3:30-5 and 6:30-7:30!! I will also be around during the soup lunch that day.
It’s time (almost) to start using the new Long Island Community Fitness Center! Here are the first three opportunities for people to meet at the community center to both sign a waiver (mandatory before anyone can use the gym, no exceptions) and become familiar with the equipment. Plan to stop by Tuesday Feb. 27th anytime between 10:00- noon; Thursday Feb. 29th from 12:30-2:30; or Monday March 4 from 5:00-7:00 PM. No need to sign up, just stop by. Any minors MUST be accompanied by a parent at one of these drop ins. Bring gym sneakers (no outside shoes in order to protect the new flooring and equipment) and a phone or tablet if you want help setting up any of the recommended apps for Peloton or Sole Fitness. If you can’t make any of these times, I will plan more based on the feedback I receive. Also, If anyone is interested in Peloton bike shoes let me know. I have a few pairs I can bring if anyone wants to try them before buying them. We will have two bikes, and at least one will have flat petals and not require bike shoes. Lastly, stay tuned for more information on certified trainers visiting to help people get started on a training program.
Updates as we get closer to being able to work out together….

Bright spot for this week! Our minds have been elsewhere worrying about the damage to the island, but a quick update on the Ll Community Fitness Center. We have some great equipment (a Peloton bike and treadmill, a Concept2 rower, Rogue Squat rack, mobility bands, dumbbells, and rubberized gym flooring!) on the way and are off to a great start! All a result of our community’s generosity and support! If you are able to support this project and help build the best community fitness space that is available to ALL Long Islanders, please consider making a donation. Checks can be sent to Town of Long Island, PO Box 263 04050 (write gym fund in the memo), or click on the wishlist at Rogue Fitness (I should have realized sooner that shipping on some of the heavier items was going to be crazy, and will use the cash donations to pick these items up in person). Also, thank you for the offers of equipment, I will be back in touch when we finalize the layout of the space. If we can use it, I will pick it up from you. Please reach out with any questions or ideas! Lisakimball.maine@gmail.com

Happy New Year Long Islanders,
The start of a new year is a great time to share some exciting news, especially as a lot of us are starting 2024 with the goal of being healthier and more active. The town has approved the use of space in the community center to create a gym! Having a community based fitness center available to everyone, year round and seasonal families, as well as visitors, will help us reach our goals of being healthier. It will have many positive impacts on us as individuals and as a community. I am excited to help move this project move forward and make this something we can all be proud of. Like all good island projects, this one will also require support from the entire community. The generosity of our community always allows great things to happen! The mission is to make this available to everyone at no cost. The Wellness Council and Selectboard have already pledged financial support to get this moving forward immediately. Jeanne Handy has offered her professional design assistance to create a design for the middle room in the community center that will include the gym area, meeting/lounge area, and also space for the recreation department. The overall conversion will make the community center more usable, more welcoming, and be a space that will serve our community well.
The plan for the gym area includes a combination of cardio equipment (some of which will have the ability to stream workout classes) and strength equipment. The goal is to outfit it with quality pieces of equipment that will be useful and functional for all of us regardless of our individual goals. I’ve consulted with a gym owner to create a list of what we should have to get started. The existing support gets us off to a great start and will allow the purchase of a lot of the cardio equipment, and I hope that you will consider helping with the rest! Once everything is operational, there are licensed trainers who have expressed interest in coming to the island for introductory classes. Hopefully this will turn into even more opportunities for group workouts, classes, and support for physical therapy programs.
Here’s how you can help!
A registry has been created for the equipment we need. The link to this is https://www.roguefitness.com/registry/long-island-fitness-cent-5t677zhh Purchases from this registry will be shipped directly to the Community Center, and there is a wide range of items at all price levels. For some of the more expensive items on the list, maybe a group of friends or family could join together! If you are uncertain of what to buy or want to contribute towards one of the larger items, you can also send a check to: Town of Long Island, PO Box 263, Long Island ME 04050 (please put a notation in the memo that this is a donation for the gym). There are also other items not included in the registry, as well as some recurring expenses that cash donations will be helpful for.
I’m hoping that you might consider supporting this project, and I definitely look forward to seeing you when we have our very own on island gym to work out at! It is so exciting that this is going to be a reality, and I would love to hear your ideas and suggestions. Please email or call lisakimball.maine@gmail.com or 207.332.3968 to hear more details or share your thoughts.
Thank you!
