Looking forward to seeing Long Islanders at the Open House. It’s a great chance to listen and learn about what the town and its volunteers have been doing since the May 2022 passage of the Long Island Comprehensive Plan. We are always looking for volunteers to tackle a piece of a project.

STATE APPROVES LONG ISLAND’S 2022 COMPREHENSIVE PLAN
Great news!
As most of you know, the 2022 Town of Long Island Comprehensive Plan was unanimously approved by the Town of Long Island on May 13, 2022, at the annual town meeting.
However, that’s not the only hurdle in Maine’s comprehensive plan process. The State of Maine must also approve our plan, which was submitted for review last fall to make sure it is consistent with the Growth Management Act.
On May 17, 2023 we received a letter from Maine’s Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry thanking Long Island for submitting its plan. The letter said:
“we are happy to report that we find the
Long Island 2022 Comprehensive Plan
to be complete and consistent. This means that we
have found all sections of the plan, including the
future land use section, to be consistent with the
Growth Management Act.”
The letter says our comprehensive plan is in effect until at least June 17, 2035. Maine encourages communities to have comprehensive plan by offering a range of financial incentives and priority rankings for state-wide projects.
The plans are generally a 18-to-24 month undertaking for each Maine community. Some utilize their planning staffs to produce the plan, some hire consultants, and some towns, like Long Island, pull together a group of volunteers to put the plan in place.
The plans are based on on an extensive checklist of state-mandated topics, organized by chapter. Just in case you are interested, here’s the link to the 19-page checklist we were required to cover to produce our comprehensive plan.
