Hi All, The party's over - I'm back!! Sounds like a good assortment of
stuff shaping up for this Forum and a chance to talk with others. Let me
know if you want to attend all or part. It would be good to share some of
the work that is happening with the Application and Selection stuff as that is
always a challenging issue for all housing groups it seems - is there a
YRHASC member willing to do a summary of where you are at for the Forum? I
will do an overview of the YRHC progress and issues. Thanks, Mark

Subj: Casco Bay Affordable Housing Forum, March 6, 2008

Hi everyone,
This is a reminder that the Island Institute will be hosting a Casco Bay
Forum on Affordable Housing on Thursday, March 6th. Originally, we were going
to run the forum from 10-2, but the ferry terminal conference room is not
available for the morning. So, the forum will run from 1:30- 5:00, in order to
coordinate with Long Island’s boat into Portland, and Peaks Island’s boat
back later that afternoon. The Forum will take place at the Casco Bay Lines
conference room in Portland (see directions below.)
We will spend the first 1 ¾ hours with a panel discussion, and then the
rest of the time will be spent sharing ideas and resources, and brainstorming
for further needs and the next Affordable Housing Symposium, scheduled for
spring, 2009.
The panelists include:
Terry Kelley, Executive Director of the Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island
Housing Authority. Terry will talk about how the land trust model has worked
with some of their developments on MDI, and how they creatively financed
some of their projects.
Joanne Whitehead, Executive Director of Islesboro Affordable Property.
Joanne will talk about land acquisition and proposed projects, as well as
current developments, challenges and successes.
Brooke Brewer, Peaks Island Fellow placed with Homestart. Brooke attended
a conference in January sponsored by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy in
California. Topics covered included an introduction to community land trusts
and designing resale formulas and managing resales. She will talk about the
information covered during these workshops and share resource materials.
Brooke will also be working with Joanne Campbell from Camden National Bank
to pull together helpful funding resources.
I’ve tried to design this content based on some of your needs. Of course, we
’ll only be able to scratch the surface of these needs in 3 ½ hours. It
would be helpful for all if you could come prepared to share tools and resources
with each other. If you’ve developed good selection criteria, applications,
resale formulas, funding strategies, board and committee development, public
outreach efforts, strategies for minimizing NIBMYism, please plan to bring
these documents/ideas. If you’d like to e-mail me any forms, I’d be happy to
 make copies.
I’m trying to leave plenty of time for all of you to talk and share
resources. I look forward to seeing you in March. Please pass along to others who
may be interested. Again, please RSVP with numbers so I can set up the room
appropriately.
Thanks, and have a great weekend!
