To all Sustain Southern Maine supporters:
Please mark your calendars for Sustain SouthernMaine's next Capacity Building Session on Affordable Housing forRegional Prosperity: By Choice Not Chance, September19, from 3-5 pm at the Lee Community Hall in USM'sWishcamper Center in Portland.
People usually think that affordable housing means assisted andsubsidized housing for low-income households. But in truth, everyone in ahealthy region needs access to usable housing in a practical location at anaffordable price. Our region’s economic health will depend on meeting thesehousing needs for both the people now here and those we wish to attract for thefuture. I think we can all agree we have not yet met that aim. And, changingdemographics as well as energy factors are now leading people to reassess theirtrue housing costs and needs, both here in Maine and across the nation. We needto be prepared as well for the housing shifts this will create.
This session, like previous ones, will include insights from a panel ofexperts and leaders on this topic and then a substantial room discussion. Thepanel includes speakers from the municipal, private development and nonprofithousing development communities. Attendees include both Partnershipsteering committee members and members of the new Regional Housing Council, among others. The session is open to anyone interested. The SustainSouthern Maine initiative and the Regional Housing Council provide newopportunities to share innovative approaches and opportunities to collaborate innew ways.
Please save the date for this important discussion that crossesboundaries to address our regional housing future.
As with other sessions, please invite anyone from your ownnetworks and organization who you think would like to attend. We willprovide more details on the program and panelists in the next week. For anyquestions, please email Dr. Jack Kartez at jackkartez at yahoo.com.

Thanks very much for your interest and support.
