The Commission’s co-chairs, Sen. Tom Martin and Rep. Andre Cushing, presented the report to the Committee and Randy Poulton and Dana Totman followed with testimony in support, calling out key findings and recommendations. The report is very well done and provides a great basis for future legislative efforts to address affordable housing problems. I would encourage you to take a look through the report when you get a chance – it is available on line through the following link: http://www.maine.gov/legis/opla/AffordableHousingStudyrpt.pdf. Thank you to everyone who helped MAHC and the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Cushing, get the legislation passed to create the Commission, and to the Commissioners and legislative staff who developed this substantive and helpful report. -Greg Greg Payne Avesta Housing/Maine Affordable Housing Coalition 307 Cumberland Avenue Portland, ME 04101 Phone: (207) 553-7777 Fax: (207) 553-7778 gpayne at avestahousing.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Affordable Housing for Maine Island Communities First modular comes ashore at Islesboro. It was an exciting day earlier this winter when the first modular came ashore at Islesboro. Now construction is well underway and two new units of affordable housing will be occupied this summer. The Genesis Fund's work to create affordable housing in Maine's year round island communities is also showing great progress. To date, six island affordable housing groups have received funding from MaineHousing, of those, two have begun construction. Two other groups have completed applications and submitted them to MaineHousing for funding. The Genesis Fund's technical assistance program continues to help manage the review and construction of the projects once they are approved. In total this work is expected to result in the development of 16 units of affordable housing in 8 island communities - helping to sustain these year round communities for years to come. Genesis Fund receives grant from Create Jobs for USA The Genesis Fund received a capital grant from the Create Jobs for USA Fund, a collaboration between Starbucks and Opportunity Finance Network(OFN). The Genesis Fund is one of the community development financial institutions (CDFIs) in the nation to be awarded a grant from the fund since the program began allocating awards in November of 2011. The Create Jobs for USA Fund pools donations from Starbucks customers, partners/employees, and concerned citizens into a nationwide fund, held and managed by OFN, for community business lending. Donors who contribute $5 or more will receive a red, white, and blue wristband with the message "Indivisible." The wristbands are individually handmade in the U.S.A. and all component materials are manufactured by U.S. suppliers, so the effort is also helping support American manufacturing jobs. If you're having trouble viewing this email, you may see it online. Share This: Dear Colleagues, I have been privileged to serve as MaineHousing director for seven years. Now MaineHousing has a number of commissioners with different policy perspectives. These differences have led to substantial disagreement about how MaineHousing can best serve the interests of its clients and the people of Maine. In order to bring an end to the current rancor, the Board and I have concluded that it is in the best interests of the housing authority and the people of Maine to reach an agreement on an early end to my term. I have been proud in my seven years to have worked with staff and board members to insulate 11,347 homes, help 6,814 Maine people buy their first home, build 2,942 affordable apartments for seniors and working Maine households, and become the first state housing authority to take positive steps to address climate change. For the better part of a year, MaineHousing has been subjected to a systematic attack that’s ground the important work of the agency nearly to a halt. In order to put this behind us, today I submitted to Governor LePage my resignation bringing an early end to my term as Director of MaineHousing effective March 31, 2012. I do so reluctantly, and in the hope that this will bring an immediate end to the campaign against an agency that so ably serves low and middle income Mainers. In closing, I wish the best for the Housing Authority board, staff and new director. I'd like to thank Governor Baldacci and the Maine Legislature for this opportunity to serve, the Housing Authority staff for their dedication and support, and all of you, our housing partners throughout Maine who have made all our accomplishments possible. Most of all I hope that the mission of the Authority to help low-income people, help first-time homebuyers, promote energy efficiency and contribute to the revitalization of Maine's towns and cities, goes forward as strongly as ever.
