MAHC members  and friends: 
We have great  news to share: Governor LePage has signed LD 841, the Blue 
Ribbon Commission  bill proposed by the Maine Affordable Housing Coalition, 
into law.   
We proposed  this legislation because we believe that the time is right to 
take a fresh  look at the status of affordable housing in Maine, consider 
creative ideas  implemented in other states, and make recommendations for 
future action to  help ensure that Maine people with low and moderate income 
have access to  quality, affordable homes. The Commission will bring together 
experts in the  housing field, state agencies and legislators to identify 
solutions to Maine’s  housing problems. 
Given new  leadership in Augusta, new state and federal budget_ challenges, 
and a new  focus on addressing the rising costs and regulatory burdens that 
impact the  housing development process in Maine, the Commission represents 
a great  opportunity for us to grow our voice in debates about the future 
of the issues  we care most about. 
As you can see  from the attached copy of the bill, the Commission will 
submit its report to  the Legislature, along with any recommendations for 
specific legislation, no  later than February 15, 2012. We will be sure to 
discuss and review the  Commission’s work in our meetings this fall, and hope to 
receive much input  from the membership as we help to shape the Commission’s  
agenda.
