Eastern Daylight Time Subj: Housing Bill Bond Press Conference & Hearing Greetings, I am writing to update you on Bill LD 774 to create affordable energy efficient housing stock that is before the legislature. Both the press conference and hearing have been scheduled for next week. These two events are a big opportunity to impact the process and show support for the bill. Press conference: Tuesday, March 24th at 11am at the Welcome Center at the State House. President Mitchell and others will be speaking to the need for affordable, energy efficient housing as well as jobs for the construction sector. Maine Affordable Housing Coalition will release Professor Charles Colgan’s analysis of the economic impacts of our proposal. Public Hearing on LD 774: Wednesday, March 25th at 1pm in Room 211 of the Cross State Office Building, behind the State House. President Mitchell, Professor Colgan, and a number of people speaking to economic development, energy efficiency and affordable housing concerns will provide testimony to the committee in a session that will likely last for about two hours. The hearing is before the Joint Select Committee on Maine’s Energy Future. The bill, An Act To Create Jobs and Improve Energy Efficiency through the Transformation of Maine's Housing Stock LD 774, can be viewed at: _http://janus.state.me.us/legis/LawMakerWeb/summary.asp?ID=280031487_ (http://janus.state.me.us/legis/LawMakerWeb/summary.asp?ID=280031487) . The purpose of the bill is to preserve and create jobs for Maine workers, and transform Maine’s housing stock, through a strategic combination of new construction, renovation and weatherization activities. Increase the supply of housing that is affordable, energy-efficient and convenient to jobs and services. There are three central goals within this bill: 1. Economic Stimulus – Create jobs for Maine workers now, when they are most needed, and increase economic activity to bolster declining state revenues. 2. Energy Efficiency – Reduce Maine’s carbon footprint, lower dependence on foreign oil, and ease household budgets. 3. Affordable Housing – Substantially increase the supply of housing that is affordable, safe, appropriately sized, and located near jobs and services. As each of you have limited time, if you can attend only one of the events, attending the press conference is likely to have the most impact. You are all welcome to attend the hearing but you should be aware it will be a long process of testimony in a full room. If you are able to attend the press conference, the hearing, or both, please let me know so that I can coordinate with MAHC. Please email or call should you have questions. Best, Mary Mary K. Gentlemen; I am requesting the placement of an article for the Warrant of this May’s Town Meeting as we have previously discussed. The YRHCorp has agreed to an equal square footage swap of land with the Methodist Church which will give us 100 feet of frontage on Leavitt Street so that we do not have to seek any variances to build on this land. We also believe the Church benefits with this boundary shift as it puts a Church outbuilding back on their property. I am using verbiage similar to that we used last year for a different swap. Feel free to modify any way you see fit. Your recommendation for a YES vote on this article would be appreciated. Article ## To see if the Town will vote to authorize the Selectmen to allow a transfer of equal square footage of lands (about 500 sq. ft.?) between Lot 626-0, owned by the Town of Long Island and authorized for use by the Year Round Housing Corporation’s “Lease-Homestead” Program with abutting Lot 627-0 owned by the United Methodist Church. All costs of this transfer to be borne by the Year Round Housing Corporation. The Board of Selectmen recommend a “YES” vote Thank you, Mark Greene, Housing Administrator **************Feeling the pinch at the grocery store? Make dinner for $10 or less. Best, Rochelle Runge Maine Commission for Community Service My name is Stephen Pleadwell and I'm a casting producer on ABC's Emmy-winning Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which rallies communities to volunteer time, labor and materials to (re)build houses for those among them in need. Our program has helped Americans from all walks of life whose homes presented them with potentially insurmountable challenges- we've helped families address everything from needing more room to take in orphaned relatives to rebuilding after a natural disaster to creating a completely handicap-accessible living space after an injury. Our currently airing 6th season has a "Heroes" theme- we've focused on helping those people who spend a significant portion of their own time helping or serving others, often regardless of their own needs. The producers of the show want to continue to showcase these inspiring stories in Season Seven, which they hope will continue to encourage everyone to give back to those around them. Although they often don't get the same accolades that one might for rescuing someone from a burning building, we know that individuals who volunteer and organize service in their communities are some of the most inspiring heroes to those who know them. I know that your organization is plugged into a large network of volunteer organizations throughout the nation and, because of that, might be able to help us reach those local heroes who need our help (or others in the community who can bring those families to our attention, as we frequently find that even those who greatly need a helping hand will think that others are in greater need). I know that you have many greater concerns than those of any television show but I believe that this program is in a position to not only showcase public service but to really help people who are deserving of assistance. Any assistance that you can offer in getting the word out to volunteer, service, and community-building organizations would be deeply appreciated. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I hope to be able to speak with you soon. Medomak Mobile Home Park becomes Maine's first Cooperatively owned park! With the help of the Genesis, residents of Medomak Mobile Home Park in Waldoboro purchased their park on March 13, 2009 becoming the first mobile home co-op in Maine. The residents now own the land as well as their homes and make their own decisions about lot rental rates and park improvements. As long time resident Alton "Shorty" Hayden said: "Now I don't have to worry about someone coming in, buying the land and kicking us all out. I don't have to worry about a huge rent increase or not having any place to go." For the past 18 months, Yvonne Mickles, program coordinator at Genesis has been working with residents to achieve this goal. Under her guidance, the group has elected officers and begun discussing park rules, maintenance issues, and lot rates. They are looking forward to improving the park grounds by tree trimming and old utility pole replacement. Already, they are enjoying a better sense of community, with many residents, a mixture of families and retirees, meeting each other for the first time. With the help of the Corporation for Enterprise Development, Genesis launched its mobile home park program in 2006 to help residents transition the parks to co-ops as they came on the market. "Mobile homes represent affordable housing for many Maine families, said Yvonne Mickles. Forming a co- op gives residents more security and a stronger sense of community." Since 1992 those who support the Genesis Community Loan Fund have understood the extraordinary work that a revolving loan fund can do. By making flexible, low-interest loans rather than outright grants to Maine's nonprofit organizations, the Genesis Fund can use the same pool of funds over and over again. An investment loan allows you to put your money to work for a set term in communities across Maine. While investment loans in the Genesis Fund are not guaranteed, we are proud of our 17-year history of 100% repayment to our investors. We offer flexible terms, chosen by the investor: * You chose the amount to invest - minimum of $1,000 and up. * You chose the length of the term - minimum of one year. * You chose the rate of interest - up to 2.5% for terms of 1 -3 years and up to 3.5% for terms over 4 years We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead here in Maine for affordable housing and community facilities. With your help, we can make a difference for our friends and neighbors. Be a part of our work and see the difference it makes! "This gives us the opportunity to remain in the community that we have called home for so long," said executive director Bill Floyd. "The building gives us the room and stability to continue our growth; and, it has already been converted into office space." Plans are underway to formalize a right of way behind the building for the walking path to the Rising Tide Market and other Route One businesses. Already it is well used by townspeople. We are happy to be part of this important community link. We expect to be in our new home May 3, 2009. Please note only our street address will change; all other contact information remains the same.
