Given annually to an individual who has made extraordinary contributions to affordable housing in Maine, the Elizabeth Mitchell award was established in 2009 by the Maine Affordable Housing Coalition. <br>

<div>Hannah Pingree, Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, was chosen as this year's recipient in recognition of her work for affordable housing for Maine's island communities. <I>"This is a crucial period in history, whether islands are going to be able to continue. There is enormous change going on," </I>Hannah Pingree said . <br>
</div>
<div>Since 2004, 20 units of affordable housing on Maine's year round islands have been created. Current plans have the potential to create twice as many units, sustaining island communities for many years to come.<br>
